Five Maldwyn Harriers took part in the first ever virtual Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 4th October 2020. Not only did they do a fantastic job of completing a marathon, but they also participated in achieving the Guinness World Record for “the most users to run a remote marathon in 24 hours”!

Well done to Liz Green, Caroline Farr, Tricia Hirst, Fay Williams and Becky Price!

Here’s what they have to say about the experience:

Liz Green said “In the spirit of if can’t beat them join them I applied for and won an unexpected place in the London marathon. Great support from Maldwyn and loved running from Newtown to Llanymynech along the canal!”
Caroline Farr said “I loved my experience of running my first virtual marathon, not only because I achieved my dream of a sub 4 hr marathon but mainly because on a virtual you have the continued support of friends to encourage you which you miss on most marathon courses! Cal Morgan paced me, then other friends joined for a few miles on route. My Mum even surprised me by turning up to follow me in her car, only for a few miles. Other friends tagged along too, and to have them there crossing the line they’d made out of rope with me was incredible and so emotional, you don’t get this normally! I will definitely miss them at the next organised marathon! They made soup and cake for everyone at the finish! Great experience!
Tricia Hirst said “I had a Good for Age place in London last year, so was very disappointed when it was postponed. So I was delighted when I could do the Virtual one which I did at the same time as running an actual marathon at Dorney Lake. A very windy and wet day but pleased to get a sub 4hr in those conditions. So 2 medals for one race!”
Fay Williams and Becky Price said “As in our usual fashion me and Fay did this with no training at all really…! We decided to walk it for that reason, so we walked from Welshpool to Newtown had a quick coffee in McDonald’s then headed back to Welshpool, was lovely to be part of the first ever virtual marathon…..the things you do for a t-shirt and a medal!”

A huge congratulations to you all! If we have missed anyone, please do get in touch!
